Our soft coated wheaten terrier named Ted has alittle issue going on. As you can see in the pictures see has alot of redness on his front paws due to a ton of licking, scratching and chewing. We have tried almost everything to help him and nothing has seemed to work. We’ve tried all the creams, changed his diet to be wheat free and have put him on antihistamines. We aren’t sure if its allergies or obbsessive compulsive. His skin isn’t really all that irritated under his hair, but he will not stop chewing!

Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone else’s Wheaten Terriers carry this habit? I really want my poor guy to stop

Our wheaten had the same problem on his leg, looks just the same. We found out he was allergic to beef, lamb and chicken. He is now on pork and potato burns. Seems to have stopped for the time being after about a month on the diet.
Previously we found that he stopped if we put a bandage around the leg, then when we took it off he forgot to lick.
Teds a great looking dog, don’t think you can help but love a wheaten

Thanks for the tips. What kind of dog food do your feed your wheaten that consists of that diet? We love wheatens so much!

Our 2 year old (Bettis) has been chewing on his legs/paws. He also has yeast infection in both ears. We have to squirt vinegar/water in his ears twice a day and then clean. His ears smell so bad. I feel so bad doing this. We took him to the vet and they said that he has allergies and wanted to do testing. I am not paying all that money if there is some kind of diet we can put him on. Please let me know what kind of food you all feed your Wheaton. PLEASE HELP!!

Ted had a bad ear infection once too. We had to put drops in to help clear it up. What helps in cleaning them out weekly with alcohol wipes. He doesn’t mind me doing it anymore and he hasn’t had an infection since. AND his ears stay nice and clean now. Unfortunately his diet really hasn’t made that big of a difference when it comes to his chewing on his paws. But we do try to give him a Benadryl daily and that seems to help. We are pretty much preparing ourselves to get some testing done in the future for it. We know that its gonna be a pretty big bill. As for his diet….we still to wheat free and only give him duck, hearing etc. We stay away from the traditional meats like chicken, beef, turkey etc. If we find any other trick I’ll let you know. Good luck!

We are having the same issues with our Wheaton, Phoebe. She has been a very healthy dog up until she turned 3(in October). Since then we have had constant problems from yeast infection in her pads, skin infections, ear infections etc… I’m about at my breaking point - I feel SO bad for her. She’s constantly biting at herself and causing herself to bleed. She’s on steriod, anti-biotic, thyroid and fungus medications. I am waiting for allergy test to come back as well as a more detailed thyorid test. The food change is next. What brand of wheat free food do you use? Is it presciption? Thanks for any help - I just want her to feel good again

O I am so sorry to hear all that. Ted started chewing on his paws early, like 6 months. His diet now consists of being wheat free and we stay away from any of the traditional meats like chicken, beef, turckey etc. We give him flavors like Duck, Hearing and Lamb. It helps alittle but I starting to believe that its allergies. We even tried to put this nasty smelling stuff on his paws, it worked for a minute, but as soon as it wore off he was back to chewing. We are currently giving him 1-2 benadryll a day and that has seemed to help alot. We plan on getting him check for allergies soon….scared of that big bill. As for his ears, he got a severe ear infection at age 1 and I now clean his ears once a week with alcohol wipes and he hasn’t had one since. This is crazy because I have been getting SO many inquiries about this continueing problem with Wheatens. I promise to inform everyone once a solution is made. Hope Phoebe feels better…we are complete wheaten lovers too!

Sorry, I just re-read your post. We give Ted Nature’s Choice for food. Its not prescribed. They even have wheat free treats.

fish and potato diet. WORD.

My wheaten has been chewing in the exact same spot. The first vet I took her to said he thought it was allergies and put her on an all-soy perscription diet (Purina). It didn’t seem to help after two months. Then we took her back and the other vet said it was a sure sign of stress and has now prescribed her doggie prozac. Our schedules have changed and she doesn’t go to doggie day care while we’re gone most of the day. After a week of stepped up walks and bitter apple application I caved to the prozac and that seemed to make a difference. I’m from California - how cliche for my dog to take Prozac and be a vegan!

I also have a Wheaten that does the same thing and she keeps yeast on her skin…causing her to get yeast infections. It is interesting to learn that other wheatens are doing the same thing….i just though it was Reese and she had several issues….She bites herself so bad that the vet put a cone on her (which she hated)….i think i am going to have her tested for allergies…thanks for the info!

Wow…this is starting to get very concerning. I can’t believe how many people are have this common problem. Your response about yeast def wasn’t the first one.
My husband and I have scheduled a testing to be done next week for our wheaten. I feel like I need to get to the bottom of this. Please watch for his results to be posted and good luck with your wheaton.

Hi,
I have a almost seven year old Wheaten and havent had any problems with ears or coat. She is on Flint River Ranch Fish and Chips.
I think one of the biggest reasons she doesnt have any problems is I havent had to vaccinate her since she was one. Every year I have her titer tested to see if she needs any of the core vaccines. I do rabies every three years since it is required by law. Hopefully Mighigan will start accepting titer test for that soon.
If your dog does have allergies I would stop all vaccinations except what is required by law in your state. A lot of the problems dog owners are seeing is due to over vaccinations and poor commerical food diet. Also if you don’t live in a state where there is high flea infestation I wouldnt use any flea protection. You are just putting a lot of harsh chemicals on your dog for no reason.
Good luck with the test and I hope you get things worked out.

My wheaten had suffered terriably with hot spots and itching. Someone recommended a product by Halo called Dream Coat which is an oil that is added to your dogs food. I have used it faithfully for a couple of years and have had wonderful results with it. Munsen’s summer itching is almost non-existent and his coat is beautiful. I have used numerous other things as food additives and most sold to me by vets - but I swear by Dream Coat. My previous dog, a Welsh terrier had terriable skin allergies also and I went the prescribed route of steroids, etc. He eventually got Cushings Disease and it (or the treatment for it) killed him. I would go to ANY extremes to avoid ever using those medications again. Of course it takes some weeks for the Dream Coat to have enough time to really make a difference but it does. I use it faithfully all year long. I’m also with the person who avoids flea prevention..I avoid as many chemicals as I can with my boy.

Hello!
Have you had results of the allergy test? Ive been having the same problems with Ukko (our wheaten)….the vet told us it was most likely to be environmental, unless the allergy lasted a lot….and it has…it is frustrating….I feel so bad having him with a cone or doped with benadryl…:( are there any foods likely to cause allergies on wheatens? I was told by the owner of a pet store to switch food to a 100% protein dog food..has any one tried this?

Our Wheaten (a ten month old male named “Coby”) doesn’t chew and lick his feet, but he does scratch his jaw a fair bit. He has been protected against fleas, ticks and lice.
Any thoughts on whether we should be concerned?
Tuesday, 28. July 2009
I don’t think you should be concerned until he starts chewing on his paws and a redness starts to occur. Just an FYI….I am pretty sure we have come to the conclusion that our wheaten suffers from food allergies. He is allergic to wheat, soy, corns and grains. There is special dog foods out there that eliminates these ingredients. Good luck…let me know if things get worse.

Hi
Ted’s allergy results showed us that he allergic to lots of things. Grass, dust, cats, weeds, etc. But after a few months of allergy shots and no change, I researched and figured out that he is allergic to wheat, soy, corns and grains. We also had been giving him lots of benadryll but I got tired of that quick and couldn’t allow myself to keep giving it to him on a daily basis. About 2 weeks ago we switched Ted to Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance dog food. Its not offered at Petsmart or Petco but we did find it at a local pet food warehouse who offer foods for animals with allergies. They explained that it would take almost 2mnths for it to finally start working and to be honest I think I am starting to see slightly better results already. We stick to fish and duck with potatoes and make sure that all 4 ingredients are NOT in the food. They also offered specific treats as well. It was hard but I had to toss out all of his favorite treats…..all of which had stuff he is allergic too. Funny, I learned more on the internet reading about other wheaten owners posts then I did from my vet. I guess wheatens have tricky allergies and experience from others is the way to go. After the he is on this specific diet for 2 months I am gonna add in a supplement to help with the softness of his coat. Its best to try one thing at a time to see if its actually working or not. I hope I have helped you. My husband and I have a soft spot in our hearts for wheatens! Good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice! I will def look into it!

Hi - I hope Ted’s allergy issues have been resolved and he is feeling much better. We got a 5 month old Wheaten in March of this year and have been dealing with several different issues.
First was the impacted teeth to the tune of $800. Then came the vomiting, heaving episodes with two seperate three day stays at the vets with an IV the 2nd time. We don’t really know what caused these but he is now on Purina HypoAllerginic food and that has helped. He keeps it down and it is being digested so for now we don’t have the vomiting & heaving. A blood panel was done and sent to the Univ of TX and we are waiting to hear from that - preliminary diagnosis is pancreatitis.
Poor little guy - we love him so much and it hurts to see him lying around not feeling good. Last night the vet suggested to give him famotidine (Pepcid) and that has seemed to help.
This is our first Wheattie - they really have wonderful personalties. When Mickey feels good he is bouncing around all over the place and running laps through the house. And there is nothing like a Wheaten Greetin!
Susan
He does chew on his feet some but so far doesn’t chew as you have described Ted.
